After a long day of sevens at Lexby IP the GRF mens squad secured a top four placing to ensure a place at the SMVeckan in Norrköping in July. The first game against Pingvin RC would be fought in damp conditions and despite doing every right and having a very good performance, unforced errors gave the victory to PRC, late in the second half. Pingvin RC would build on this victory and go on to win the final against Vänersborg RK after pulling back a 3 try deficit to win the final despite only having 6 players on the park. GRF's second test would be against Malmö and this was a must win for the squad to guarantee a place at SMveckan. Once again the weather was a leveller but this time the squad executed well and got reward for their efforts, playing the rugby in the right parts of the field. The semi finals would have GRF play against the home team, Spartacus. Spartacus, despite losing a close game against Wexio, had bounced back to shock the crowd by beating 7's favourites Vänersborg rk. They followed this up by another easy victory against GRF who never really seemed to get back into the swing of things having got to the semi-finals. The senior men will head to the SMveckan with a 4th seeding, with PRC first, Vänersborg second, Spartacus on third. Huge positive to make the top 4 and make it to Norrköping. This year the mens competition has , for the first time in a long time, had all the clubs getting involved. With the semi qualifiers over, the teams qualified from the North and heading to the SMveckan are Stockholm Exiles, Södertälje RK, Hammarby RK and Trojan (Norrköping). The will be a lot of hard work to do from here to now, but tonight the lads deserve to pop the champagne!
The ladies squad have two more qualifiers to go before we see the outcome. With 3 different regions it will be the top two teams that go through as well as the next best two teams out of the groups. having won the first round in Skövde, the ladies followed up the win by once again beating Kalmar , Vänersborg and Borås, ending the day with a final against Kalmar Södra and winning the match with 54-14.
